Chompin' The Suburbs

Preaching the gospel of Toronto's suburban resto scene. The digs ain't always fancy. Or easy to find. But your tongue will literally thank you for foregoing the pretentious, the boring and the overpriced places that dominate downtown. With more and more of the city's ethnic communities settling in the 'burbs, it just makes sense.

Legend Chinese Restaurant (Dim Sum)

Though it's better known as home to Chinese wedding receptions, Legend is quickly becoming one of suburban Toronto's better-known dim sum destinations. As with most suburban dim-sum locales, ordering at Legend is a la carte, which means dumplings are fresh from the steamer, and haven't been sitting sat on a wheeled cart making dozens of trips around the restaurant. Tarot balls are the best I've had in the city -- perfectly crispy on the outside, and just as sweet and porky on the inside. Worth a double-order. Other dumplings left something to be desired, and har gao (the measure of any good dim sum restaurant) was a bit on the greasy side. In other words, unless you live for tarot balls, you're better off going the extra kilometre, and continuing north on Yonge St., until you hit Highway 7. Price: $15 per person.
